Leaf Pruning

Pruning last year’s canes in the Spring is just the beginning of keeping up with the vineyard.  I have almost finished the first round of leaf pruning which is actually more about cutting out unwanted canes from the bottom of the vine and small ones from the center than it is about picking off the first leaf or two from each cane to reduce leaf hopper damage.  Please excuse the color in these photos taken with my phone.  Now this plant has plenty of air and light to let the grapes ripen sooner and allow spraying the undersides of the leave if necessary.

This is the same vine with unwanted foliage removed.

This is a Baco Noir plant with plenty of grapes but also too many leaves
